Maria Sharapova Captures 2013 BNP Paribas Open Title in Indian Wells, CA

INDIAN WELLS, California (Reuters) - Maria Sharapova played aggressively from the start to win her first title since last year's French Open with a 6-2 6-2 demolition of Caroline Wozniacki in the BNP Paribas Open final on Sunday.

In a showdown between two former world number ones, the second-seeded Russian overpowered the Dane with a ruthless display, breaking her twice in each set to seal victory in one hour 21 minutes.

Sharapova was in attack mode throughout with an array of deep groundstrokes and superb serving to claim her second title at Indian Wells after winning for the first time in 2006.

The 25-year-old Russian ended the match in champion style with a 109 mph service winner before raising both arms skywards in celebration. "What makes it so special is when you end up as the champion, that's why I am smiling," a beaming Sharapova said courtside after extending her run of at least one WTA title each year since 2003.

World Class Pro Tennis Comes to Memphis on Feb. 16-24

Caroline Wozniacki Wins Laughs with Serena Williams' Imitation

Caroline Wozniacki imitated Serena Williams during an exhibition in São Paulo, Brazil.The imitation consisted of Wozniacki stuffing towels down the front of her top and the back of her skirt in an attempt to mimic Williams’physique.

Wozniacki adjusted the padding as the crowd whistled while Maria Sharapova looked on in astonishment. Wozniacki added Serena-esque grunts while hitting shots down the middle of the court. When she won a point, Wozniacki fist-pumped enthusiastically and took the towels out of her clothing. 

Crowds love to see the pro players, such as Wozniacki and Novak Djokovic, exhibit a little of their comical side. This was another one of their lighter moments and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed it.

New USTA Adult League Divisions for 2013

Nationally, the USTA will have just two league divisions – Adult and Mixed. The Adult Division is broken down into Age18 & up; Age 40 & up; Age 55 & up; while the Mixed Doubles Division will currently consist of 18 & up; 40 & up.

Gone are the terms Senior and Super Senior and now ages are classified as Adults 18 & up; Adults 40 & up; Adults 55 & up. The restructuring will take effect in January 2013.

Adult Leagues are for men and women 18 years of age or older, with championship layers, culminating in a National Championship.

• NTRP levels for 18 & up; League Type are Open, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0+.

• NTRP Levels for 40 & up; League Type are 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5+.

• Team match format is two singles matches and three doubles matches. Open, 2.5 and 5.0 NTRP levels play one singles
match and two doubles matches.

• NTRP Levels for 55 & up; League Type are 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0.

• Team match format for 55 & up; League Type is three doubles matches. Sections are encouraged to add a 65 or 70 & up.

Mixed Doubles Leagues are for men and women 18 & up; 40 & up; with championship layers culminating in a National Championship. Team match format is three doubles matches. NTRP levels are 2.5, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 and 10.0.

Umpires and Line Judges Lawsuit Against USTA Could Turn into Class Action

Lawsuit Against USTA Addresses Pay for Umpires and Line Judges

The United States Tennis Association remains involved in a lawsuit alleging that between 2005 and 2011, it violated state and federal labor laws by denying proper wages and overtime pay to its chair umpires and line judges.
In a sport where the actions of tennis officials on court have drawn several angry outbursts in recent years from players, including a pair of high-profile protests by Serena Williams at the Open, the legal action might lift a curtain on a rarely noticed friction behind the scenes at the tournament.
The U.S.T.A. invites about 300 certified chair and line umpires to New York each year to officiate at the Open. It pays their travel expenses and most hotel, meal, and incidental costs over two and a half weeks.
The umpires receive between $115 and $250 per day, depending on their U.S.T.A. certification levels. An article in The New York Times last year reported that the United States Open offered the top umpires the lowest compensation among the Grand Slam events. The lawsuit, filed last September, claims the umpires are entitled to employee status and overtime pay for late matches, which sometimes end after midnight with no additional compensation.
The plaintiffs are Steven Meyer of Boca Raton, Fla.; Marc Bell of Delray Beach, Fla.; Larry Mulligan-Gibbs of Elkins Park, Pa.; and Aimee Johnson of West Monroe, La. Meyer and Johnson are lawyers, Mulligan-Gibbs a pharmaceutical company executive, and Bell a manager for a paving contractor. Their lawyers declined to make them available for comment.
Since April, the plaintiffs have been seeking a U.S.T.A. address list that would identify about 300 chair umpires and line callers who are working at this year’s Open. The law permits the umpires to use the list to notify fellow workers who might be eligible to join a class action lawsuit. The U.S.T.A. has been resisting the request.
In July, Andrew Carter, a federal judge in the Southern District of New York, ruled in favor of the umpires’ request for the addresses but deferred a decision on the timing of their release.
The U.S.T.A. has argued that turning over the addresses before or during the tournament had “the potential for disruption” at its signature event.
“We believe U.S. Open officials take great pride in their involvement with the U.S. Open, and they won’t do anything that will jeopardize the quality of the tournament,” said Chris Widmaier, the association’s managing director for corporate communications.
In court papers, the U.S.T.A said that sharing the addresses might “turn the U.S. Open into an unregulated forum for umpires to debate the merits of this lawsuit in a highly public environment with significant media attention.”
Orin Kurtz, a lawyer for the umpires, said, “I don’t how it would disrupt.”
In court papers, the plaintiffs claimed that for more than five years, they were among hundreds of fellow umpires improperly listed as independent contractors.
The U.S.T.A. argued that the umpires are not employees because federal and state statutes exempt it from wage and overtime requirements, based in part on its status a recreational organization. The U.S.T.A. said the law was meant to exempt minor league baseball teams, state fairs, racetracks and similar organizations.
In a June letter to the judge, Kurtz said the United States Open could not qualify as a recreational establishment under the law.
Kurtz’s letter argued that the “largest tennis organization in the world” with 750,000 members was “a far cry from a minor league baseball organization that operates only during summer months.”
Dan Malasky, the U.S.T.A.’s senior counsel for professional tennis, said, “We believe that on the facts these officials are independent contractors and not employees.”
The umpires “suffered no damages,” said a U.S.T.A. legal brief, because it paid them “all wages and compensation to which plaintiffs may be entitled.”
Asked how much his four clients were owed, Kurtz said the wages in dispute amount to “no more than a couple” of thousand dollars apiece.
The U.S.T.A announced last month that it was increasing player prize money by about 18 percent, or more than $2 million, to $25.5 million at this year’s Open. Widmaier declined to reveal the tournament’s budget for officiating at this year’s championships.

Anil Chakka and Jacqueline Carr Voted Arkansas Junior Tennis Players of the Year by Central Arkansas Tennis Talk

The final votes have been cast by the readers of Central Arkansas Tennis Talk, and the winners of the 2012 Arkansas Junior Tennis Player of the Year Award are Anil Chakka of Little Rock and Jacqueline Carr of Rogers.

Anil Chakka (pictured upper right), is currently the highest ranked Arkansas junior boy in the Southern Section of the USTA. Anil reached #9 in the Southern rankings in the Boy's 12s division. In Arkansas competition, he swept thru the Boy's 12s division at the Arkansas Junior State Qualifying Championships without losing a set.

Jackie Carr of Rogers(pictured lower right) is currently the highest ranked Arkansas junior girl in the Southern Section of the USTA. Jackie reached #8 in the Southern rankings in the Girl's 16s division. In Arkansas competition, she swept thru the Girl's 16s division at the Arkansas Junior State Qualifying Championships with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 in the finals of this Arkansas Level 1 tournament.

Arkansas/Ft. Smith Senior Women's 4.0 Team is Finalist at USTA League National Championships

The 2012 USTA League 4.0 Senior Women's National Championships took place this weekend in Indian Wells, California. The Arkansas Team from Ft. Smith representing the Southern Section took 2nd Place at the event. The Ft. Smith team captained by Anita Woodard lost 2-1 to a Southern California team from Mission Hills in the finals. The scoring went as follows:

Julio Olaya and Mary Wright win the Overall Arkansas State High School Tennis Championships

Julio Olaya (pictured right) of Pulaski Academy defeated Jake Jacoby of Pulaski Academy 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 for the Boy's Singles Title in the Overall Arkansas State High School Tennis Championships. Mary Wright (pictured below) of Hot Springs Lakeside narrowly defeated Emily Metcalf of Valley View 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 to win the Girl's Singles division title.

In reaching the Boys' Finals, Olaya defeated Grady McCain of Greenwood 6-2, 6-1 in his first match and defeated Reed Churchill of Fayetteville 6-0, 6-3 in the Semi-finals. Jacoby reached the Finals by defeating Drew Dodge of Conway Christian 6-0, 6-1 in his first match, and by defeating Christian Mathis of Mtn. Home 6-0, 6-0 in the Semi-finals.

Enroute to the Girls' finals, Wright defeated Laura Lanier of Episcopal Collegiate 6-2, 6-3 in her first match and defeated Arielle Butler of Searcy 6-1, 6-0 in the Semi-finals. Metcalf reached the finals by defeating Kami Ward of Lake Hamilton 6-1, 6-0, and Alye Darter of Heritage 6-2, 6-0 in the Semi-finals.

Mark Vaught, At Tea Party Meeting, Proposed New Admin Bldg, Laughed At For Lack of Funding

Mark Vaught, Conway City Alderman, proposed the building of combined administrative offices for the city and county at a tea party meeting. With the city budget already overstressed by excessive funding of numerous projects, the crowd laughed at this "Jackass of a Proposal" by expressing doubt that the city could afford such a project.

Arkansas Women's Senior 4.0 Team from Ft. Smith Captures USTA Southern Adult League Championships

Arkansas Women's Sr. 4.0 Team from Fort Smith captained by Anita Woodard finished 1st at the USTA Adult League Southern Section Championships. The Arkansas team destroyed its opponents enroute to an easy 3-0 victory in the finals against the Mississippi team from Greenville captained by Margie Lee. Mark Vaught, Conway Politician and Recreational Tennis Player, was caught dumpster diving. City Alderman Vaught along with other city officials misappropriated city revenues causing a huge budget shortfall. Desperately needing cash reserve funds, Vaught and his cohorts raided Conway Corp's Sanitation reserves in order to balance the city's checkbook. Mark Vaught is now seeking a Faulkner County position.
