I enjoyed watching the finals on Memorial Day. I was a little disappointed in that a better setting wasn't created for the Boys and Girls 18s finals. The ATA used to put their matches on the stadium court with a chair umpire. The ATA got a little sloppy in this area. Also, I didn't see the media there nor saw an article in the major newspaper. The ATA must have not notified the media and lost an opportunity to promote the game of tennis!
I watched the finals of both the 18s Boys and Girls at Burns Park. The finals were played on some obscure courts, maybe Court 20 or so. What happened to highlighting these matches on the stadium court. The ATA can't say that they didn't have a chair umpire because I saw Derek there. Checking the tournament home page, I noticed that Cindy Curtis, a leftover from Leslie Pfeiffer's poor leadership role as head of the ATA. Maybe that was the problem. Since Pfeiffer caused the USTA junior membership to fall 20%, maybe Curtis is trying to see if she can cause junior membership to fall even more. I don't think you can blame Deana Garretson since she needs Curtis around to help her get situated in her new job position.
The Ark Jr Qualifier is the state's top jr tournament and used to get great coverage by the Dem-Gaz. I didn't see an article and would have to blame the tournament director for this lost opportunity to promote the sport!
